Orosei was once the main city of the region called southern Baronia and is located on the slopes of a volcanic hill in the Cedrino valley. The sea, the beaches and the little bays that can be reached from Orosei are what makes this tourist destination one of the most renowned of Sardinia.
Old buildings and streets paved with volcanic stone are the hallmark of the fascinating and well maintained historical city center of Orosei. Traces of the thriving past of the town can be admired while walking along the main streets, an example is the old jail and the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora del Rimedio.
Orosei, as well as many towns of Sardinia, organises over the year several events regarding its traditions. Among the most important feast days is the Holy Week with ist several ceremonies and processions accompanied with traditional chors and the Feast of Santa Maria ‚e Mare, where the Holy Virgin, who protects the sailors, is celebrated. During this ceremony the simulacrum oft the Holy Virgin is led by boot and decoreted with flowers.
